15 For this is what the (A)high and exalted One
Who [a](B)lives forever, whose name is Holy, says:
“I (C)dwell in a high and holy place,
And also with the (D)contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to (E)revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 For I will (F)not contend forever,
(G)Nor will I always be angry;
For the spirit would grow faint before Me,
And the (H)breath of those whom I have made.
17 Because of the wrongful act of his (I)unjust gain I was angry and struck him;
I hid My face and was angry,
And he went on (J)turning away, in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, but I will (K)heal him;
I will (L)lead him and (M)restore comfort to him and to his mourners,
19 Creating the [b](N)praise of the lips.
(O)Peace, peace to him who is (P)far away and to him who is near,”
Says the Lord, “and I will heal him.”
20 But the (Q)wicked are like the tossing sea,
For it cannot be quiet,
And its waters toss up refuse and mud.
21 (R)There is no peace,” says (S)my God, “for the wicked.”

Levi (Matthew) Called

14 (B)As He passed by, He saw [b](C)Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He *said to him, (D)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

15 And it *happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and [c]sinners were [d]dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16 When (E)the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the [e]sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “(F)Why is He eating with tax collectors and [f]sinners?” 17 And hearing this, Jesus *said to them, (G)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

18 (H)John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they *came and *said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “While the groom is with them, [g]the attendants of the groom cannot fast, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the (I)days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast, on that day.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, [h]the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

Observances of Fasts

58 (A)Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (B)wrongdoing,
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they (C)seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
As a nation that has done (D)righteousness
And (E)has not forsaken the ordinance of their God.
They ask Me for just decisions,
They delight (F)in the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (G)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not [a]notice?’
Behold, on the (H)day of your fast you find your desire,
And oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and (I)strife, and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you have done today to (J)make your voice heard on high!
Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it for bowing [b]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (K)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (L)acceptable day to the Lord?
Is this not the fast that I choose:
To (M)release the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the ropes of the yoke,
And to (N)let the oppressed go free,
And (O)break every yoke?
Is it not to (P)break your bread [c]with the hungry
And (Q)bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the (R)naked, to cover him;
And not to (S)hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your (T)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (U)recovery will spring up quickly;
And your (V)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the (W)Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will (X)call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry for help, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (Y)remove the yoke from your midst,
The [d](Z)pointing of the finger and (AA)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you (AB)offer yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the [e]need of the afflicted,
Then your (AC)light will rise in darkness,
And your gloom will become like midday.
11 And the (AD)Lord will continually guide you,
And (AE)satisfy your [f]desire in scorched places,
And (AF)give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a (AG)watered garden,
And like a (AH)spring of water whose waters do not [g]fail.
12 Those from among you will (AI)rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will (AJ)raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the (AK)breach,
The restorer of the [h]streets in which to dwell.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If, because of the Sabbath, you (AL)restrain your foot
From doing as you wish on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a (AM)pleasure, and the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your (AN)own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And (AO)speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take (AP)delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride (AQ)on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the (AR)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Danger of Unbelief

12 (A)Take care, brothers and sisters, that there will not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart [a]that falls away from (B)the living God. 13 But (C)encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called “today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the (D)deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ (E)if we keep the beginning of our [b](F)commitment firm until the end, 15 while it is said,

(G)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as [c]when they provoked Me.”

16 For who (H)provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, (I)did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (J)whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear (K)that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were (L)disobedient? 19 And so we see that they were not able to enter because of (M)unbelief.

The Believer’s Rest

Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (N)come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but (O)the word [d]they heard did not benefit them, because [e]they were not united with those who listened with faith. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

(P)As I swore in My anger,
They certainly shall not enter My rest,”

although His works were finished (Q)from the foundation of the world. For He has said (R)somewhere concerning the seventh day: “(S)And God (T)rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this passage, “(U)They certainly shall not enter My rest.” Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (V)disobedience, He again sets a certain day, “Today,” saying [f]through David after so long a time just (W)as has been said before,

(X)Today if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”

For (Y)if [g]Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (Z)rested from his works, as (AA)God did from His. 11 Therefore let’s make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same (AB)example of (AC)disobedience. 12 For (AD)the word of God is (AE)living and (AF)active, and sharper than any two-edged (AG)sword, even penetrating as far as the division of (AH)soul and (AI)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (AJ)able to [h]judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (AK)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (AL)open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom [i]we must answer.
